Drupal: CMS
Drupal is one of the world's leading website content management systems (CMS). The system is similar in many ways to the easier to use Joomla CMS but has better membership management built into the core system. The content management area (admin area) is more difficult for non-experts to get to grips with but the system has many merits.
Drupal is often used in the following website types:
- Community web portals
- Discussion sites
- Corporate web sites
- Intranet applications
- Personal web sites or blogs
- Aficionado sites
- E-commerce applications
- Resource directories
- Social Networking sites
Building a strong e-commerce presence is often better achieved by using the Joomla content management system.
Custom CMS Development
We are often asked to provide pricing on custom developed content management systems. The request always has its root in a customer having received a proposal from a website development company to assist them in updating their own website. Normally the proposal would involve the client having to login to an admin area to edit pre-existing web pages. There is normally no way to add more pages and adding extra functionality is not provided for.
The reason why we normally suggest that a client seriously considers a strong CMS like Drupal or Joomla is because of the almost unlimited developemnt potential of their websites once the system has been properly setup. We have not yet found a client who needs a custom developed system and the costs are always reduces when using an Open Source CMS system. The savings are normally in the area of 50%.
The power of Open Source software is brilliantly showcased in the Joomla Content Management System. Open source systems are developed by a community of online developers and made available to anyone who wishes to use the product at no cost. Because of the sheer numbers of developers these projects often out perform any commercially available product.
